DC Toys for Tots

As you are well aware, each year the Baltimore DC Building Trades supports the annual holiday DC Toys for Tots efforts.  We collect toys to help support this effort each year and we are asking for your help with this again this year.  The AFL-CIO will be kicking off this drive with a flag raising ceremony, to honor our countries veterans, on November 9, 2018 at 10:00 am.  The ceremony will be held at the AFL-CIO headquarters, Washington, DC in front of their building.  Consistent with previous ceremonies, US Marines from Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, will be our guests to present colors and arms to their fellow service men and women.  We would also like to give special honor to our union members who are currently serving or have served in the past.  Please see the attached email and letter from Helmets to Hardhats Executive Director for more information.

Given your patronage in the past to help this veteran led endeavor to provide holiday toys to needy families, we are hoping that once again we can count on your generosity.  We will be collecting toys, here at the Union Hall, until Thursday December 13th, so that we may deliver all the toys on Friday December 14th to the AFL-CIO for the DC Toys for Tots.

Thank you, in advance, for all your patronage and may you and your families have a Very Merry Christmas this year.

Guess who is coming to town ...
Yes, that time of year is just around the corner.  We always have the Family/Children's Christmas Party on the first Saturday of December, and that Saturday just happens to be December 1, 2018, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  As always, we will be serving the entree' and drinks, and your special side dishes are greatly appreciated.  Please remember to RSVP so that Santa has enough candy canes and goodie bags for all the children.  The RSVP form can be download below this article.  Also, don't forget to bring a wrapped gift for the children that you are bringing so that Santa can give them out.  It is always a great time doing arts and crafts, watching a Christmas movie, visiting with family and friends, and most of all, great food.  I have to say the beautiful Christmas Cookies are my favorite. Hint, Hint, Mrs. Kristen Ayres.  Kristen makes the BEST Christmas Cookies !!! Come out and spend time with your Local #10 family this Christmas.  You won't regret it.

Interesting Article, New York Times

We are all very aware of the Opioid Epidemic that continues to rage across the country.  I read a very interesting article in the New York Times this morning on this issue.  In 2017 there were 72,000 drug overdose deaths in our country.  2018 looks to have even more by the end of the year.  The construction industry has the second-highest rate of pain medication and opioid misuse in the country.  Unlike alot of our counterparts, our insurance supplies help in this area.  NEIBP has all the resources needed to get mental health and drug related help.  All you have to do is ask.  Three simple words, "I need help" is all you need to say to get what you need to overcome these addictions.  If you, or a family member, are not sure how to reach out and ask, call the Hall.  Reggie Garner is working, very hard,  to reach out and help anyone who wants to be helped.  Please, if Reggie is not the person you think you can talk to, anyone in the Hall will make themselves available to help you get what you need to start that road to recovery.  Reggie has also started a Recovery Support Group.  They meet the 3rd Friday of every month, here at the Hall, at 4:30 pm.  Anyone, who would like to attend, is welcome.  Just give Reggie a call and he can give you all the details and answer any questions you may have.  I have added the link below to the story I read.  Take a look and read what they have to say.  We are here for you and your family, if you want the help.

Multi Employer Pension Committee Mailing Address
It has come to our attention that the complete mailing address for Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) were not included in the mailer that you received last week and this week.  Brother Mike Herrity and his wife, Rose, who are very heavy in the politic scene, have sent us a list of the mailing addresses for all of the committee members.  Below this article is a down load containing all of those addresses.  You can print it out and copy the letter if you would like to send it to all of them, or you can get the direct mailing addresses for which ever members you would like to send a letter to.  Thank you all for your help in letting the committee know how we feel about them trying to mess with our pension.

Local #10 Car Show and Rib Cookoff

The Local #10 Car Show and Rib Cookoff will be held Saturday, October 20, 2018.  The Local will provide each competitor with a rack of baby back ribs.  Your ribs will be available at 6:00 am at the Union Hall.  We will be serving ribs, wings, bbque and all the sides.  Rib judging will be at 2:00 pm.  Food will be served from 11:00 am until we run out.  Please register your car, motorcycle, RV, boat, or truck with Tammie at the Union Hall.  You should also register, with Tammie, if you plan on competing in the Cookoff.  Each Competitor must bring their own grill or smoker to compete.  You should set up your gear along the back side of the parking lot facing the Hall area.

Come join us and enjoy the day with your brothers and sisters and their families.

Rest in Peace, Brother

The Officers and Members of Local #10, are hereby notified of the passing of Honorary Brother, William "Billy" Shumaker on September 13, 2018.  Billy had to be one of the nicest men I ever met.  He was a small man, but stood 12 feet tall when it came to personality and drive.  He knew what he wanted to do and knew how to do it.  He will be greatly missed by many people.  Billy's services are as follows:

Brinsfield Funeral Home, 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD on Friday, September 21, 2018 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, where services will be held.

Interment will be Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD.

Until we meet again, Rest in Peace, Brother.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Billy's family and friends at this time of great sorrow.

Words of Wisdom

THE ONLY WAY TO DO GREAT WORK IS TO LOVE WHAT YOU DO.  IF YOU HAVEN'T FOUND IT YET, KEEP LOOKING.  DON'T SETTLE.
